It’s a common question, and the answer is no. They are related and complementary, but not the same. Project management is focused on delivering a solution. It helps teams plan, organize, and complete a project within a set timeline and budget. Think of it as managing the technical side of change. Change management is focused on people. It provides structure and support to help individuals and teams adopt new tools, processes, or ways of working. This helps ensure that the changes introduced by a project actually take hold and succeed over time. On smaller projects, one person might wear both hats. But on larger or more complex initiatives, separating the roles of project manager and change manager can make a real difference. When a project manager is focused on scope, timelines, and budgets, they may not have the capacity to fully support the people side of change. Similarly, a change manager can bring dedicated focus to communication, training, stakeholder engagement, and adoption—areas that often require different skill sets and sustained attention. Having both roles working in collaboration creates a stronger foundation for success. The project gets delivered, and people are ready and equipped to embrace the change. |
